Today is World Diabetes Day! The theme for World Diabetes Day this year is Access to Diabetes Care. In many cases, type 2 diabetes and its complications can be delayed or prevented by adopting and maintaining healthy habits. When not detected and treated early, diabetes can lead to serious and potentially life-threatening complications. Learn more about this initiative at the link: https://worlddiabetesday.org/

Joe Roos was the guest speaker last week at the GFW elementary school Veterans Day program. In addition to being a veteran, he wrote and illustrated a children's book called "The Lost Little Pug," which he read to the students. Students sang a song in honor of veterans, and many students honored the Veterans in their lives by turning in a form that was then posted on the "We Love Veterans" wall!

The votes have been counted and voters have approved the plan to revoke and replace the GFW Public Schools operating levy at a lower rate. Vote totals are Yes - 803 No - 230 As promised during the April 2023 bond election, the district’s current operating levy of $1,406.30 per pupil will now be replaced with a new authorization of $992.40 per pupil subject to inflationary increases. The district is confident that great programming will be maintained with a single site and a reduced operating levy. The levy will remain in place for ten years. The board will canvass the election results on November 15, 2023. Thank you to everyone who participated in this election and for your continued collaboration and support of GFW Public Schools!

Today is election day! Don't forget to participate in the Operating Levy Revoke and Replace election and special election for two school board seats for GFW Public Schools. GFW Public Schools aims to keep taxes low while providing a top-notch educational experience for our students and important services to all the members of our community. While state statute requires ballot language to include a disclaimer of a yes vote meaning a property tax increase, by revoking the current operating levy and replacing it with a reduced amount, voters will actually see a tax decrease in their taxes payable in 2025 with the approval of the question. https://www.gfwschools.org/page/2023-operating-levy

Featured Frequently Asked Question: What happens if the ballot question is not approved? If voters decide to reject the ballot question, the current operating levy will remain in place at $1,406.30. This would provide additional funding to the school district, but would result in higher property taxes when combined with the newly approved building bonds. Because both questions were approved in the April Building Bond Referendum, when combined with an upcoming operating levy reduction, a $200,000 home in the district will see a tax increase of $5.63 per month or $67.65 per year. If the current operating levy remains in place, the same home would see an increase of $178.79 annually. The current operating levy is set to expire in 2031. https://www.gfwschools.org/page/2023-operating-levy

GFW Public Schools currently has an operating levy in place of $1,406.30 per pupil, and are proposing to reduce it to $992.40 per pupil, which will also reduce the tax impact for the community. This was the promise the Board made to the community if a new PreK-12 facility moved forward. Get more information about the November 7 election! https://www.gfwschools.org/page/2023-operating-levy
